Ballance Street flats are typical of 1960's housing construction; built on a sloping site with blocks varying in height from four to six storeys. Access was by internal communal staircases affording inadequate disabled access, security or tenant privacy.

The brief was to construct a new six-storey reinforced concrete lift shaft, spiral staircase and entrance foyer.
 
 
Entry is now by magnetic card with video cameras for added security and improved access to all floors, addressing the issues outlined. Heating, natural ventilation and lighting were also engineered for, achieving a sympathy with the building architecture, and the environment while meeting the building authority requirements.
